Sanctuary Cove Art Festival

The Sanctuary Cove Art Festival is hosted by Mulpha Sanctuary Cove and organised by Art Promotions Queensland. The festival is located in the heart of the Sanctuary Cove precinct on the stunning waterfront South Boardwalk Marina.

The Sanctuary Cove Art Festival returns in 2011 with an exciting line up of art and festival events. The main pavilion will host the Sanctuary Cove Schools Eco Art Competition and the Sanctuary Cove Gallery, a mixed exhibition by quality Queensland artists.


There will be artists in demonstration, workshops, art classes and a Master Class with nationally acclaimed landscape artist Jeff Makin. There will be a band performance stage and roaming musical entertainment, face painting by the wonderful team at The Face Painting Company and interactive children’s art in the Marine Village. Fun for the whole family!

Art Classes and Workshops

Master Class with Jeffrey Makin

Winner of the prestigious Tattersall’s Club Landscape Art Prize and former Director of RMIT, Jeffrey Makin brings his artistic expertise to Sanctuary Cove. The Master Class with Jeffrey Makin will be hosted in an outdoor studio in the grounds of the beautiful Hyatt Regency Hotel.

Saturday’s class consists of an introductory lecture on drawing and painting followed by practical tuition on composition and technique in the plein air atmosphere.

Sunday will continue the tuition and conclude with a critique of completed work and a closing talk on landscape art.

The Finishing Touch with Mal Leckie

Do you have a work in progress but just can’t seem to turn it into a masterpiece? Join Mal Leckie and learn from this award winning artist and art teacher on how to complete a painting successfully.

The class will be hosted in the Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove. Students are encouraged to bring a painting which is partly completed for critique by the artist and offer advice on technique’s in how to refine your masterpiece in the making.

Multi award winning Queensland artist Noel Miller will be hosting a class in charcoal, incorporating colour and collage.   With works in private collections throughout Australia, London and New York, Miller is one of Australia’s prominent artists in this medium.

The class will be hosted in the Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove and include tuition in charcoal and colour, sketching and composition. The artist will also assist you with advice on how to refine your work.

Mixed Media with Kim Mancini

Queensland born and bred artist Kim Mancini’s work embraces unsurpassed freedom of expression in brilliant colour. Combining a variety of luminous colours and delicate mediums Mancini will help bring your piece to life.

The class will be hosted in the Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove and include tuition in mixed media on canvas and individual card. The artist will also offer critique and advice on how to refine your work.

Children's Art Classes and Workshop

Come down to the Sanctuary Cove Art Festival for a day of fun and activities for the whole family. Art classes for children will be running throughout the weekend. There will be 45 minute classes starting on the hour every hour between 10am – 4pm. Classes are fully supervised, include all materials and your budding little artist will complete a piece of work to take home.

Classes for ages 4 - 8yrs and 9 - 13yrs

Schools Eco Art Competition 2011

In 2011, as a part of the Art Festival, Sanctuary Cove will be hosting an Eco Art Competition for schools in South East Queensland on the weekend of 18th – 19th June.

The Competition

The competition is open to all local Brisbane and Gold Coast schools and all age groups. This is an exciting opportunity to showcase the artistic talents of students across south east Queensland whilst providing a valuable platform to learn about local environmental issues.


Age Categories

• Prep - Year 3
• Years 4 – 7
• Years 8 – 10
• Years 11 – 12


Themes
Artworks can be entered in each of the following categories and
in all year levels:
• Biodiversity
• Water conservation
• Sustainable energy
• Sustainable forests
• Recycling initiatives
• Sustainable consumption
• Ocean and coastal environments
The competition has been designed to incorporate the UNESCO international educational themes. For further information, please see the UNESCO website:

Medium

Artworks can be submitted in any medium.


Size
Paintings and drawings on canvas or paper should not exceed 80cm x 80cms. Three dimensional works such as sculpture and installations should not exceed one metre in any direction.


Weight
Artworks should not exceed 10kgs.


Number of Entries
Students may enter multiple categories but only one entry per category.


Judging
Judging will be based on technical merit and the adherence to the theme category entered. One work per category from each level will be chosen to move to the final judging. Richard Blundell, Deputy Director of the Queensland College of Art will be judging the competition with the winner to be announced at the opening night event on Friday 17th June.


Display
The works will be displayed in the Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove Art Festival June 18th & 19th 2011.


Prizes
Our friends at Australia Zoo will be providing a trip for all the winning entry students and teachers to AUSTRALIA ZOO. Students will participate in a behind the scenes conservation educational program and a private zoo tour.

All winning entries will also receive a 12 month school subscription to the Global Learning Centre website and resource pack and Chroma Australia paint kit.

2010 FESTIVAL:

In 2010, the Festival showcased the work of 72 artists with a total of 374 artworks displayed across four galleries, The Maritime Gallery, Sanctuary Cove Gallery, Photographic and Emerging.

Galleries:

Maritime Gallery by Don Braben

The Maritime Gallery featured over 90 works from foundation member, vice-president and Fellow of the Australian Society of Marine Artists, DON BRABEN. Don's paintings have won many awards and his work is in many public, private and corporate-collections-worldwide.
Don’s work has been displayed at such prestigious events as Mystic Marine International, USA , Royal Society of Marine Artists, London and ANL Art Awards Australia .

Sanctuary Cove Gallery

The Sanctuary Cove Gallery was a collaboration of up to 200 works by established artists throughout South East Queensland. An open medium, open themed exhibit, The Sanctuary Cove Gallery comprised works in landscapes, seascapes and beyond.

Photographic Gallery

The Photographic Gallery was a display of framed, mounted and canvassed works by various artists with a variety of subject matter. The gallery was a mixed collection including contemporary and traditional photo media works.

Emerging Gallery

Proudly brought to you by Travis Dewan, the founder and Director of Vegas Spray, the Emerging Art Gallery consisted of works by emerging contemporary Brisbane artists.

Art Festival

The festival was opened Friday 18th with a cocktail party in the main pavilion. Guests were treated to an array of entertainment, special guest Hayley Bateup was painted by internationally renowned body artist Milane Tornatore and musical entertainment from an Italian soprano.
The festival weekend was a huge success. Hundreds of visitors enjoyed the galleries, artists in demonstration and children’s mural. The festival will return in 2011!
